Before Your Visit

Aftercare Instructions

Follow these guidelines after your dental treatment for optimal recovery.

After a Routine Cleaning

You may experience mild sensitivity for 24-48 hours — this is normal
Continue brushing and flossing as usual
Use a sensitivity toothpaste if recommended
Avoid very hot or cold foods if sensitivity is bothersome

After a Filling

Avoid chewing on the treated side until the numbness wears off
Wait at least 2 hours before eating
Avoid hard or sticky foods for 24-48 hours
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed

After a Tooth Extraction

Keep the gauze pad in place for 30-60 minutes after extraction
Avoid rinsing your mouth for 24 hours
Don't use a straw for the first 24 hours
Apply ice packs to reduce swelling (15 minutes on, 15 minutes off)
Eat soft foods for the first few days
Avoid smoking for at least 72 hours

After a Root Canal

Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the permanent crown is placed
Take prescribed medications as directed
The tooth may feel sensitive for a few days — this is normal
Schedule your follow-up appointment for the crown placement
